CHAPTER 18

Cote Blanche General Hospital

William lost track of time. Each day brought more of the same…breakfast, lunch and supper, with visits from the nurse in between. Although he was chained to the bed and his left leg trapped in a cast, the uniformed guards were a constant at the door to his room. They removed the chains and forced him to get up and shuffle around the room three times each day. “Have to keep the circulation going,” one of the guards had commented. “We need to keep you healthy so we can get you sentenced to death.”

“Dying might not be so bad,” William had said. “Maybe then the itching in my leg would stop.”

William tried to make conversation with his nurses and some of the friendlier-looking guards, but no one wanted to be his buddy. Nearly every day he asked about his wife and nearly every answer was the same; “Prisoners can’t communicate with one another.”
